Ennoia

Ennoia (en-no’-i-a): A kind of purposeful holding back of information that nevertheless hints at what is meant. A kind of circuitous speaking.

“I’ll be absent. I won’t be able to make it. I won’t be there.”

I wanted to break it to them gently.

“Are you going to die Daddy?” Little Minnie asked with a little tear shining in her eye,

“No, No!” I told her, “It’s almost that bad, but not quite.”

Bill asked, “Are you working late?” No son “I told him.”

My wife Molly yelled “You fu*king prick! I know what you’re up to. It’s that goddamn bitch Melinda!”

I nodded my head. I had missed dinner for five nights. My “breaking it gently” gambit hadn’t worked.

I had run Melinda over with my e-bike and felt compelled to visit her in the hospital. It was her fault that I ran her over. She ran in front of my bike escaping from her abusive boyfriend Frankie Mittola, who choked her “just a little bit” when they had sex. She was tired of it and told him so. She broke up with him on the spot.

He went into a rage, picked up a zip tie, and threatened to choke her to death with it.

She ran out of his house, and smack into me and my bike, and then, into a bed at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Both of her legs were spread apart and raised up traction. I must admit, I couldn’t help but look up her gown. I was ashamed, “looking” was part of my reason for being there & I told Melinda. She said, “Go ahead Clifford, look all you want.” That’s when I got a crush on her.

It was crazy but I was hooked. I vowed to see her when she was released from the hospital . I had turned evil and forsaken my little family. Then, I decided to stay away from the hospital for good. No more salacious staring at Melinda’s snatch. But, it was no good, I dreamed about it almost every night. After a week, I succumbed and went to the hospital. She had checked out and left no forwarding address. They told me her boyfriend, a Mr. Mittola, had picked her up.

“What!?” I was shaken.

Mittola picking her up made it a clean break for me. She was a cheater too. We were both disgusting cheating miscreants. I vowed never to see her again—two cheaters are too many in any relationship. One is enough.

That evening, when I was at the dinner table. Little Minnie said “Gee Ddady, I’m glad you’re here for dinner again.” I thanked her and looked down at my pork chop and thought about Melinda’s vagina. I was disgusting. I picked up my knife and cut into the pork chop. I swear, I heard it moan.
